Cold shrink is a type of rubber tubing or bushing that shrinks to a size many times smaller than its original dimensions. Unlike heat shrink, the word "cold" means that it does not require any type of heat to shrink in size.

Cold shrink tubing is typically made from one of two types of rubber: EPDM or silicone. They both have their advantages: EPDM rubber tends to be stronger and able to withstand impact, making it ideal for cold shrinking where it might come in contact with other materials, such as internal machinery. Silicone rubber will shrink to a smaller, tighter size than EPDM, making it ideal for applications such as waterproofing cell phone towers.

One of the most popular uses for cold shrink tubing is in cell phone towers, where they are often used to protect cable connections from water and weather. Cold shrink tubing is also used for various types of cable protection, including cable tray applications, and in very confined or dangerous spaces where hot air guns or blowtorches are difficult to use. Cold shrink tubing is also very popular in the telecommunications market, as well as the oil, energy, cable TV, and satellite industries.

We wanted to shrink the cold shrink tubing, but it was held in place by the plastic core inside, which prevented it from shrinking. That plastic core is perforated and has a section of tubing that you can pull out, making removal very easy. Once you start pulling the inner core out, the tubing shrinks instantly.
